A long tail keyword (or rather key phrase) is a combination of 3-5 words that are specific and relevant to the topic of the web page. In the case of products, the long tail key phase is likely to include the product model or reference number.
Some experts claim that the majority of searches on the web come from long tail phrases and consequently these are of vital importance to SEO. Long tail keywords are more relevant to the site and searches on these phrases lead to better quality web traffic (which is likely to lead to more conversions than normal keywords). Also it is easier to achieve higher ranking for long tail keywords than it is for single words or short phrases.
Using long tail keywords for PPC (pay per click) or other paid marketing is less expensive as less people are likely to place bids on longer keyphrases.
In a nutshell, the advantages of long tail keywords are:
- Easier to rank in search engines
- Will not have too much competition
- Can boost conversion
Notes:
- Google claims to optimize sites for up to 10 word phrases. Other search engines are likely to uptimize on much shorter phrases.
