Search engine submission is the method by which webmasters can submit a or changes to a site directly to the search engines. Most of the larger search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing use 'Crawlers', 'Bots', and 'Spiders' that eventually find and index most web sites on the Internet without the need for search engine submission.
The main reasons for submitting a site to the different search engines are:
- to allow the search engines to discover a new site (where incoming links may not yet have been established)
- to communicate changes to site pages to the search engines and speed up the process of these changes being indexed
- to target the smaller search engines that rely only on URL submission
